ABOUT JAMIE BERNSTEIN

Jamie Bernstein is an author, narrator, director, broadcaster, and filmmaker. Her 2018 memoir, Famous Father Girl, is about growing up with composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein, and pianist and actress Felicia Montealegre in an atmosphere bursting with music, theatre and literature.

Jamie has written and narrated concerts about Mozart, Aaron Copland, and Stravinsky, as well as “The Bernstein Beat,” a family concert about her father modeled after his groundbreaking Young People’s Concerts. She appears worldwide performing her own scripted narrations as well as standard concert narrations, such as Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait” and her father’s Symphony No. 3, “Kaddish.”

Our Dad, Leonard Bernstein, Would Want His Music Played at the Kennedy Center

“We asked ourselves: What would our dad do? In our hearts, we already knew the answer. He would let his music be heard.”

LEONARD BERNSTEIN:
CITIZEN ARTIST

Jamie Bernstein's hourlong presentation — Leonard Bernstein: Citizen Artist — began as a means of engaging and informing young musicians about her father's life and work, so that they may look to him as a role model and inspiration in their own artistic efforts. Due to popular demand, Jamie's talk has evolved into a presentation for adults of all ages, kids of all ages, musical newbies, and musical cognoscenti.

In today’s world, where young musicians struggle with the notion that being an artist doesn’t do enough to help a troubled planet, Jamie feels more strongly than ever that her father’s approach to music will resonate deeply with music students. Older listeners will appreciate learning more about the hero they grew up with, while younger listeners will discover a compelling role model. In short, the presentation has something for everyone!

…we spend it worshipping Leonard Bernstein’s daughter Jamie, who blazed like a meteor through her father’s music (ya wanna brief explanation of the point of usin’ a tritonic score? You got it!), anecdotes about his creation and—anything else she wanted.

“Bernstein paints a fascinating picture of the dizzying magic that Leonard Bernstein brought to his music—and the complexity to his home life.”
—PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY

“You think you had a complicated father? In this wry and clear-eyed, ardent, and altogether terrific memoir, Jamie Bernstein lets us in on what it’s like to have a childhood as fraught as it was charmed. Plus, great gossip! (I’ve run out of friends to share the Michael Jackson anecdote with—so I’m going to meet more people.)”
—PATTY MARX

“Growing up in the presence of a superfamous parent is no easy thing. Jamie Bernstein presents an undisguised and understanding picture of her father, family, and friends… The book is full of inside stories and personal perspectives on the inspiring, spontaneous, and often no-holds-barred challenges of Bernstein’s multiple worlds.”
